Register .co.za domains

Have you ever done a search for register .co.za domains in Google? I would think that you’ve only done this if you live in South Africa.

But I recently wanted to see how much it would cost to register a .co.za domain without taking out the hosting package that normally goes along with the domain registration. So I did the above search in Google and checked out about 10 of the paid results and organic results, and here’s the ASTOUNDING results:

www.africaregistry.com – $35 (about R250)
www.registrations.co.za – R200 (They claim Telkom charges R419)
www.godomains.com.au – AU $139.95 (about R700!!!)
www.afrihost.com – R300
www.names.co.za – R399

Now I don’t know about you, but when you can get a .com domain for about $10 (around R70), i think the above prices are a bit of a rip-off. Of course, there are cheaper places, like the service provider I’m using to host this site (www.anno.co.za). They only charge R70 to register a .co.za domain, and of course, it’s free if you take out a hosting package with them.

Yes, the above link is an affiliate link, which will get you a 10% discount on a hosting package, and no, this post isn’t just a plug for my hosting provider. But, if you ARE looking for a website host for your South African site (or even .com and other international domains), I FULLY recommend them. Their service is UNBELIEVABLE! And you can tell them I said so… ;-)

  1. Um, it costs R50 to register a domain name from the official registrar of .co.za’s. And anyone can do it.

    The address is http://co.za

    That’s it, just http://co.za

So unless you didn’t know this, then this post is just a plug :)

  2. I actually have never seen the co.za site. Thanks for pointing it out.

I’ve just taken a look at http://co.za and it doesn’t exactly seem as easy as it could be. So I still think the extra R20 is worth it. And, as I say in the post, it isn’t JUST a plug, because I have used anno.co.za to host my site for quite a while and their service is excellent.

Thanks again for pointing out the other site though.

Happened upon this by chance. I second the ease of using Anno, I have about six or more registered through them, its easy and Anno will bend over backwards to assist more than any provider, absolutely guaranteed.

  4. Thanks for your input, Richard.

  5. A bit late, but just in case someone stumbles upon this post.

Sure anyone can register a domain name directly with co.za for only R50.00, but the problem is that you have to supply working nameservers and their IP Addresses before the domain will be registered by COZA. That is why many hosts charge a domain registration fee as well as Domain Parking fee, which is the cost of keeping the domain on their nameservers.

  6. I just used your recommendation to register a domain after a very bad experience with another south african company who literally stopped talking to me and won’t refund my money.

But is your company all they claim to be, my confirmation reads like this:

Your ANNO order reference number is .

    No reference number.
Another line lists blank for account number,
let’s hope I don’t have another bad experience

  7. Strange that you had a weird automated reply from Anno. I would say just reply to that mail (or mail support AT anno.co.za) and let them know.
